Magazine Articles and Other Writing....
I guess I like to write. Perhaps it's an addiction, or some ego need, or whatever, but the problem manifests itself in the occasional magazine or newspaper article. I've listed a few below for your interest. They cover various subjects. If they have previously appeared in print, there will be an acknowledgement at the beginning of the article. There is no particular order in how they are listed.

The Autumn issue of Georgia Backroads magazine features an article titled "A Killing on Ring Jaw Bluff." It reccounts the 1925 murder trial of Charlie Rawlings, my great uncle. By any measure, he was a very rich man. He ended up in prison with a life sentence, convicted for arranging the murder of his first cousin. After reading the transcript of the trial, I think the state's prize eyewitness was lying. It's a great read! I will post a copy of it once the current magazine issue is no longer available.

Have I Got a Pill for You...: This is a fun little piece on what's called "Direct-to-Consumer" advertising of medicines. Kinda scary, when you think about it.
Previous Articles....
The Great Yazoo Fraud: Real estate speculation, high-pressure lobbyists, crooked politicians, political disasters, investors at risk of losing it all, and finally, the Government Bailout. Sound familiar? It does, but it all happened more than 200 years ago in Georgia's first major political scandal. Read all about it in this article from the Spring 2009 issue of Georgia Backroads magazine.
Investing in the Land: This is a short essay on land--especially timberland--as an investment alternative. If you'd paid some attention to this when the article came out in the Spring of 2008, you'd be better off today.
Upscale Peru: Ah! My favorite subject--travel--in one of my favorite countries, Peru. This piece was written after my wife and I went to Machu Picchu in June 2008.
Confessions of A Cruciverbalist: The sad truth about crossword puzzle addiction.... I even wrote a crossword puzzle to go with this. If you really want to try to solve it, click Here.
In Praise of Beetles: A brief essay on some of nature's most prolific, if not most fascinating, creatures.
Easter Island: This is a link to an abbreviated version of an article that appeared in the Travel Section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. To read the full version, click Here.
Taking a Chance on El Salvador: A most fascinating country! When my brother and I arrived at the immigration desk at the San Salvador airport, the officer couldn't believe we were there to see the sights. She said, "Hay pocos touristas por aqui...." This article was also in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Lost Confederate Treasure: This is a 3-part article on what "really" happened to the Confederate gold after the fall of Richmond, Virginia to the Yankees in April 1865. I think it's interesting history. Each part is on a separate web page.
Secrets of the Upper Ogeechee: This is "my" river, the place where I grew up and where my ancestors settled more than 200 years ago. Let me tell you about its little-known history and natural beauty. This two-part article appeared in Splash magazine.

Look for an article in the Winter edition Georgia Backroads magazine entitled, "The Genius of Georgia Architect Charles E. Choate." Choate was a talented, prolific architect and builder whose career spanned nearly four decades and produced hundreds of buildings of all types across Georgia and neighboring states. An unusual concentration of Choate-designed structures are found in east-central Georgia's Washington County. If you like history and architecture, you'll find this of interest.
